About the Write Backup file (ABK) When you save a file in Write, Celframe creates a backup of the old copy. For example:
1. Create a new document, type some text and save it (e.g. call it ?mydoc?).
Result - Celframe creates a standard document called ?mydoc.aww?.
2. Type some more text and save.
Result - Celframe saves the old ?mydoc.aww? to ?mydoc.abk? and then saves the new changes to ?mydoc.aww?.
The backup file contains the document at its previously saved state. This provides you with a measure of security should you accidently save changes you don?t want.
To access the backup file, select File/Open and set ?Files of type? to ?Celframe Write Backup?.
To switch the backups off (or back on) select Tools/Options and clear or set the Create backup checkbox.

All I can see is the page - the menus have disappeared You?ve selected to view the document in ?Full Screen? mode. This is not a fault - it?s useful if you need to edit your document with as much of the document displayed as possible. The menus are still accessible by clicking on the top-most pixel of the screen (where the menus would normally be).
To turn off Full Screen mode, press Alt-V and then select Full Screen which toggles this setting on/off.

Black cells appears black after import from Excel Excel allows two colors to be mixed together to form a pattern fill for a cell. Celframe only supports a single flat color - so we chose to import the color from Excel that is set as background, which is usually fine.
However, if the Excel user mixes 75% white onto a black background (a sort of grey in Excel) Celframe only imports the background, e.g. 100% black. Note that some versions of Excel allow a black background with a 100% white over the top - resulting in a white cell (crazy but true). If this apparently normal cell is imported, you?ll get a surprise.
The solution is either:
* In Excel, choose a flat color, or better mix of colours (100% white over black makes no sense, 25% black on white background would import better than 75% black on white background).
or
* In Celframe, select Format/Cells/Color and set the affected cells to white (or whatever color suits).

Can Data Access be used with MySQLMySQL is a poweful DataAccess Server that is used on many driven
MySQL is a poweful DataAccess Server that is used on many driven websites - see http://www.mysql.com. Celframe Data Access can be used to act as a ?front end? - the application that displays and edits data. The following steps outline how to connect the two. It assumes that Celframe Database is running on the local Windows PC and MySQL is running on a server (remote or local).
1. Download and install the MySQL ODBC driver. See: http://www.mysql.com/products/myodbc/.
2. Create a new ODBC data source: Goto Control Panel, Administrative Tools, Data Sources ODBC.
3. On the User DSN, select Add and select the MYSQL driver (if you can?t see this, check instructions for step 1).
4. Give it a name: e.g. MySQLCelframeTest
5. Enter the server name, the dataaccess name, the username and password - you may have to contact your network adminstrator for these details.
6. Start Celframe data Access and create a new blank Data access.
7. Select File/Import and choose ODBC as the driver and OK
8. Select the Machine Data Source tab and choose MySQLCelframeTest
9. You should now see a list of tables (if not go back to step 5 and try the Test button)
10. Choose a table and, assuming you want to work with live data rather than import a copy of the data, select ?Attach?
You can now use and edit the table as though it were a normal Celframe table.

Can I edit my Microsoft office documents in Celframe Online? You can create, open, edit and save Microsoft Office Word, Excel, and PowerPoint files from Office 97 to Office 2003.
|
Can I limit who I want to edit or only have access? Yes. When you share a document, you can set the collaboration level to read-only or co-author.
|
Can I save my documents to PDF? Yes. With Celframe Online, you can convert documents from Celframe Write (.doc), Celframe data Access (.xls), and Celframe Power Presentation (.ppt) formats directly into PDF format without needing additional applications.
|
Can I stop sharing documents? Of course. The creator of a document can stop sharing by going to the ?Share? interface choosing the people you want to stop sharing with, and clicking on the ?Stop Sharing? button.

Can the spell checker from Write be used in Outlook Express? The spell checking engine used by Celframe Office is third party software and is not compatible with Outlook Express.
We suggest either:
* Use Write to compose the email and then use the File/Send/Text option.
* Purchase a third party spell checker that is compatible with Outlook Express. ABC Spell is one such solution.

Can?t get the Product Key to work. To enter an Activation Key (called Product Key prior to version 4), follow these steps:
1. Start any Celframe application (Start/Program Files/Celframe Office).
2. If the trial period has already run out, you will be presented with a dialog asking you to enter an Activation Key. If the trial period has not yet expired, then select Help/About and click the Register button.
3. Confirm that the version of Celframe matches the one that you have purchased a product key for. For example, all purchases after September 2004 will be for version 4. If you have purchased version 4 and the dialog box says ?Celframe Office 2002? or ?Celframe Office 2000? then you should download and install the latest software before entering the key. Please see celframe downloads.
4. The three boxes must now be filled in exactly according to the details we?ve given you. Note that all the fields - name, organization and activation key - must be exact (see note b. below).
5. As soon as step 3 is complete, the ?OK? button becomes active - click on this to complete the process. You will now be able to start the Celframe program(s). If the OK button does not become active, then it can only be because the text you?ve entered does not exactly match the details you?ve been given or the key does not match your current version.
Trouble shooting
1. The activation process does not allow Name and Organization to be set the same. Please contact support if you think this might be the case.
2. If you select Help/About/Register in any Celframe application and the dialog says ?this application is fully registered? then no further action need be taken.
3. If you select Help/About in any Celframe application and you cannot see a Register button, then no further action need be taken.
4. Please note that the Registration details for Name, Organization and Key MUST BE EXACT, including punctuation, spacing and capitalization.
Examples:
If the name specified in the confirmation of purchase email was ?Phil Roach?, entering ?PHIL ROACH? or ?P. Roach? or anything other than ?Phil Roach? will cause registration to fail.
If there was no organization specified in the registration email (or letter) don?t try adding one in the registration screen.
If the confirmation of purchase email specified ?Inc.? (note the period) as part of the organization field, please don?t enter ?INC?, ?Inc? or ?Incorporated?.
5. If you?re still having problems, try copy and paste from the registration email into the register dialog.
6. You can check your product key online - see Login here.
7. As a last resort, copy the details you?ve entered into all three boxes and email it to support@celframe.com

Can?t see pictures in Write - all I get is an icon Symptom: Typically this will be a picture file inserted into Write - the graphic doesn?t display and only an icon is visible.
Cause: Write requires a ?server? to display the image. This is some other program that is able to display the particular picture format through OLE.
Solution: Use Photopaint to be the default application associated with Jpegs. To do this, start Celframe Photopaint, select Tools/Options/Associations (or File/Preferences/Associations in versions earlier than Photopaint 2002) and check the image type you want.
|
Can?t see text in Write - all I get is blank screen This is caused by not having an up-to-date driver for your graphics adapter. You can usually remedy this by:
* Downloading the latest graphics driver from the manufacturer of the graphics card (recommended).
*Lower the graphics performance (Click the Start button, select Settings/Control Panel and select ?Display? - on the ?Performance? tab, set ?Hardware acceleration? to None or the next level up.
*Setting the Zoom to ?Margin Width? (select View/Zoom for the current document and Tools/Options/Zoom for the default setting).
More information
This usually occurs on installing Windows 95/98 (or installing a new graphics card under Windows 95/98) and using the Driver that Windows decides on rather than installing the driver according to manufacturer instructions. This can happen with the ATI Rage set of graphics adapters. For example, if you let Windows 98 choose the driver having installed the ATI 3D Rage PRO card, you will see the following driver information (Click the Start button, select Settings/Control Panel and select ?Display? and view the Adapter tab):

Cannot set the top and bottom margin to zero (or some other small setting) The top and bottom margins contain a header and footer respectively. The header and footer has a setting to determine distance from the edge of the paper. If you try to set the page margins into this header/footer area they will automatically reset to fit.
Solution 1 (version 4 only): Drag the margin control on the horizontal ruler using the mouse. This will force the header/footer to be be moved towards the edge of the paper (or removed alltogether)
Solution 2 (all versions): Select View/Header and Footer Setup and clear the enable header and footer checkboxes. Now the page margins can be set to 0 (or something small) in File/Page Setup.
Solution 2 (versions 2002 and earlier): Select View/Header and Footer Setup and set ?From Edge? to zero. Now the page margins can be set to 0 (or something small) in File/Page Setup

Customer Relationship Management (CRM). Customer Relationship Management is a process or methodology used to learn more about customers' needs and behaviors in order to develop stronger relationships with them. There are many technological components to CRM, but thinking about CRM in primarily technological terms is a mistake. The more useful way to think about CRM is as a process that's where Celframe will help bring together lots of pieces of information about customers, sales, marketing effectiveness & responsiveness and market trends.

Default sort order
The default sort order in Data access is determined by the Primary Key. This can be set using Format/Table, clicking on a field, selecting Format and then setting Index to Primary Key. When adding new records, the table will show the new entries at the bottom of the table. As soon as the table is closed and re-opened, the table will be sorted according to the Primary Key.
Primary Keys are important in data access design. They provide the unique identifier for a record. So usually, you should not use fields like ?surname? or ?company name?, since you cannot guarantee these will be unique. If your table has no obvious candidate for a primary key (e.g. product number, or policy number etc), then simply add an incremental field to your table and set it to be the primary key.
If you want to work with a table in some pre-defined sort order that is different to the primary key, then create a separate Sort Order. A quick example is as follows:
1. Right click over the field in table view and select a sort order (Ascending or Descending).
2. Select Format/Sort Order and give the sort order a new name and OK the dialog
3. Next time you want to work with the table, click on it in Database Manager and select the named sort order directly. Alternatively, open the table and use the Query toolbar to select the sort order.

General Troubleshooting of Install and Patch Install
The technology Celframe uses to install itself and any update patches relies on Microsoft Windows Installer. The reality is that this was not really designed for Internet installs and though it works for around 90% + of the time, when it fails, it?s usually better to work around the problem rather than try to find the underlying reason.
There?s an extra layer of complexity in installing patches, which must be installed in sequence and the original install files must correctly be identified.
Work around
If Celframe Office 4 is not already installed, please follow the instructions in Knowledge Base Article 22: Zip version.
If Celframe Office is already installed, and a patch fails or a full install from the web site fails, please follow these steps:
1. Download the zip file according to the instructions in Knowledge Base Article 22: Zip version
2. Uninstall existing Celframe Office 4
3. Re-install from the zip file

How about pivot tables
There is no ?Pivot? function built into this version of Celframe. We have however written a simple macro that can be used to turn column information into a pivot table (or cross-tabulation). To see an example, download and open the following Celframe spreadsheet:
pivot.aws
To use the code in this example for all Celframe spreadsheets:
1. Open pivot.aws
2. Select Tools/Macro/Macro Editor
3. Open up the code in the pivot.aws Macro Module
4. Select all the code and Copy
5. Paste into the Application Macro Module
The macro ?Pivot? can now be used in any Celframe spreadsheet.
Feedback on the above most welcome - please send to support@celframe.com

How do I automatically open file type XYZ in an Email with Celframe Windows allows one (and only one) program to be associated with a particular file type. For example, .doc is often associated with Microsoft Word, .aww Celframe Write. You can choose which program opens what files types (and also remove any unwanted associations). This affects opening attachments in email and opening files using Explorer.
If you want to use Celframe to open Microsoft documents, you can change the association for the following file types:
File Extension Microsoft Celframe
DOC Word Write
XLS Excel Spreadsheet
MDB Access Database
PPT Powerpoint Presentation
Changing the setting depends on what version of Windows you are running.
Windows XP
1. Select Start/My Computer
2. Select Tools/Folder Options
3. Select the File Types tab
4. Find the file type you want and click Delete
5. The next time you open that particular file type (double-click in Windows Explorer or double-click in your email client) you?ll be prompted to select a program - just pick the application you want and check the ?Always use this program...? box.
Windows 98
1. Select Start/Programs/Windows Explorer
2. Select View/Folder Options
3. Select the File Types tab
4. Find the file type you want and click Remove
5. The next time you open that particular file type (double-click in Windows Explorer or double-click in your e-mail client) you?ll be prompted to select a program - just pick the application you want and check the ?Always use this program...? box.
You can use the above method to remove an unwanted association - for example, if you?ve accidently associated PDF with Celframe (which can create PDF files but cannot read them).

How do I create address lables Address labels are printed and created by Celframe Database (can also be done in Write in
version 4). The typical scenario would be printing your address list on labels. Here?s an outline of how to get started:
1.Start Database: Start/Programs/Celframe Office/Celframe data Access
2.Create your address book: If you have already created your address book in data Access skip to step 4. If not, create a new data access with File/New and enter a new name. Add a table by selecting File/New/Table, select Table Wizard, select the ?Customer? table, click Next, click the ?>>? button to add all the fields and then click the Finish button. Click OK and then give your table a name, e.g. Addresses.
3.Add your data: Double-click on the new table to open it and then add some real names and addresses.
4.Create a label report: Select File/New/Report and choose the Labels option. Choose the label type to match the type of label stationery you have (nearly all stationery will match a known Avery label format). Click Next and choose a table (e.g. Addresses). Click Next and choose the fields for your first line of the report - e.g. cust_title, firstname, lastname - use the ?>? button to select these fields. Click Next and add the remainder of your fields. Click Finish.
The report can now be previewed and printed.

How do I fill a sheet of labels with the same address Please note: Celframe Write version 4 can do this easily. Please see Upgrades.
What you want is to print a sheet of labels with the same name and address, say 8 labels. You can do this using Celframe?s relational functions. The solution seems a little long-winded perhaps but it does mean that you can choose any address by changing a single field.
Suppose you have a client table that looks like this:
ClientID ClientName Address1 Address2
1 Phil Roach 11 Petworth Court San Francisco
2 Andy Smith 38 St Saviours Wharf Durham
3 Chris England 23 Kingston Drv Sydney
Note: The table above has a ?ClientID? field that uniquely identifies any particular record. You could use ?Name? - but what happens if you have two ?Andy Smiths?? If your name and address table has not already got a primary key, add one! (e.g. Select Format/Table, add a new field ?tablenameID? and make type Incremental. Click Format and set Index to be Primary).
Repeat Labels Step 1
Create a table with the name ClientRepeat. It has two fields and a single record:
ClientRepeatID ClientID
1 2
Make ?ClientRepeatID? an incremental field and the primary key. Make ?ClientID? of type numeric and select the Format button to set the numeric format to Long. This table stores the ClientID that you want to print out - in this case, ClientID is set to ?2? which is the record for Andy Smith.
Repeat Labels Step 2
Next, create a table with the name LabelRepeat. It has one field and the record is repeated for the number of labels you want. In our example, we want 8 copies of a label so there are 8 records as follows:
ClientRepeatID
1
1
1
1
1
1
1
1
Make ?ClientRepeatID? of type numeric and select the Format button to set the numeric format to Long.
Repeat Labels Step 3
Create a new relation with the name Label Print that joins the above tables together. Here?s what the relation looks like in the create relation dialog:
Left Table Join Field Right Table Join Field Join Type
Client ClientID ClientRepeat ClientID Inner
ClientRepeat ClientRepeatID LabelRepeat ClientRepeatID Inner
Repeat Labels Step 4
Now create a new label report. When prompted, base the label on the Relation Label Print and then proceed as normal (see Knowledge Base Article 74: How do I create address lables for more details).
How it works
Enter the ?ClientID? of the address you want to replicate in the ClientID field of the ClientRepeat table. This table is relationally linked to both the LabelRepeat table (save?s typing the ClientID 8 times) and the Client table to pull through the actual data.

How do I insert a non-breaking space? A non-breaking space looks like a normal space character except a line break won?t separate the words around it. For example, you might want the text ?Manchester Utd? to always appear on the same line.
Solution [Celframe Office 98]
Select Insert/Symbol, choose the font you are using (not ?symbol?) and pick the first character on the fifth row (use the Select then Copy buttons)
Solution [Celframe Office 2000/2002/v4]
Make a macro to do the job instead:
1.Select Tools/Macro/Macros, type ?HardSpace? for the macro name and click Create.
2.Enter the following macro code and save:
Selection.InsertAfter Chr(160)
Selection.Collapse abBack
3.Make a keyboard shortcut to the macro: select Tools/Customize/Macro Shortcuts, pick the macro you?ve just created, click into the Select New Shortcut Key box and key in the shortcut (e.g. Ctrl +). If it doesn?t conflict with existing keystroke, select Assign.

How do I open an Celframe file in program ?xyz? Usually, you will be required to export the file before the third-party program (?xyz?) will be able to read it. This process, and the formats to choose, depends on what type of Celframe file it is...
Write - you must export the file in a format that the program ?xyz? can read. Many third-party word processors can read Microsoft Word files, which is worth a try if you are not sure what formats are supported. See Knowledge Base Article 41: How do I open or save MS Word docs & MS Excel spreadsheets
Spreadsheet - you must export the file in a format that the program ?xyz? can read. Many third-party spreadsheet programs can read Microsoft Excel files, which is worth a try if you are not sure what formats are supported. See Knowledge Base Article 41: How do I open or save MS Word docs & MS Excel spreadsheets for more details
Database - Celframe Database 2000 uses the same format as Microsoft Access which is a good start. See Knowledge Base Article 42: How do I export to Access 97? for more details. Otherwise, you?ll need to save each table as a separate file. In Database, select File/Export, pick a Database format (dBASE III is widely accepted by many other third party programs) and then choose the table you want to export. Repeat this process for each table you want to export.
Photopaint - you must export the image. Most image editing programs will be able to read jpeg or gif or bmp. Use File/Save As and pick a format in the ?Save As type? box to export the current image.

2. Select Start
3. Select All Programs/Celframe Office
4. Press the Ctrl Key and keep it pressed
5. Drag and drop a program (say Write) onto the desktop
6. Release the Ctrl Key
To remove an icon you have placed on the desktop, right-click over it and select Delete.

How do I re-install? There are three ways Celframe could have been installed on your PC:
1. Installed by the computer manufacturer
2. Installed by yourself from CD-ROM
3. Downloaded and installed from our web site
In the case of 1. and 2. you should re-install from the CD-ROM. Note that when a computer manufacturer provides Celframe pre-installed, they will nearly always provide a CD-ROM with a setup program for Celframe and, very often, other programs as well. If you are not sure, put the provided CD-ROMs in your computer and see what instructions are displayed. Alternatively, search for a folder on the CD-ROM called ?Celframe? or ?Celframe Office? and run the SETUP.EXE program in this folder directly.
If you cannot find the setup program or CD-ROM is lost or broken, then you can download a complete copy of the software from our web site. See Re-installing from Celframe.com below.
Re-installing from Celframe.com
You can install or re-install directly from our download page. Please note that all downloads are trial versions - but if you?ve installed a non-trial version or purchased on-line and entered a Product Key or the computer came with Celframe already installed, then these settings will be remembered and no further action beyond download and install will be required
But what if I?ve re-installed Windows or bought a new PC?
In that case, you?ll probably need to re-install and then login into our site to obtain your Product Key (unless you?ve made a note of your Product Key of course!). There?s no charge and don?t forget, you?ll have 10 days in which to get this organized.

2. Pick any table (or create a dummy table - it does not matter)
3. Add one field and Finish the wizard
4. In Form Design mode, delete the field since all we want the user to see is buttons and text
5. Select Insert/Macro Button and draw out the button on the form
6. Right click over the button and select Properties
7. Set an appropriate caption and click on Macros
8. In the Events column, select Click
9. Click New Macro and give it a name to match its function
10. Repeat steps 5 to 9 as required
11. Save the form and in Database Manager, select Macros
12. Click on each of the new macros in turn and right-click and select Edit
13. You can rename the default ?MacroName? to something more meaningful
14. Add code to open a form or table or report. Examples:
* DBForms.Open(?SomeFormName?)
* Tables.Open(?MyTableName?)
* Reports.Open(?Report1?)
* Quit
Note that the above are all single line macros - you can make them as simple or complex as you want. The last of the above examples exits the data access application.
You can now edit the form and add text (and pictures) to make it more user friendly.
See also Knowledge Base Article 100: Start Database and open a form for details on how to open the form automatically.

How to create a toolbar button to start external applications You can use the macro facilities in Celframe Write, Celframe Spreadsheet, Celframe Data Access and Celframe Photoalbum to run external programs from toolbar buttons. The following example will show how to set this up to start Celframe Spreadsheet. All you need to change is the name of the exe (the prog= line) in step 3:
1. Select Tools/Macro/Macros
2. Enter a meaningful name, for example ?Start Spreadsheet?, in the Macro Name box and click Create
3. Edit the macro so it looks like this:
Sub StartSpreadsheet
prog = ?abspread.exe?
Set WshShell = CreateObject(?WScript.Shell?)
WshShell.Exec(prog)
End Sub
4. Close the macro Window and select Tools/Customize
5. Select the Macro tab and drag and drop the Start Celframe Spreadsheet macro to a toolbar (you can create a new toolbar if you prefer).
6. Without closing the Customize dialog, right-click over the button you just added. Select Edit button image to give it your own icon or select Text Only or Image and Text to show the name of the macro as part of the button.

How to make a clean install If there has been several installations of Celframe and there are problems running any of the applications, it?s sometimes best to perform a ?clean install? using the latest update of the software:
1. Download the following:
http://www.celframe.com/download4/zip/celframe4_15.zip
2. Unzip to new folder (note you cannot ?open? the zip file and expect to run the installer - the zip must be extracted to a new folder first).
3. Uninstall existing celframe Office 4 - see Start/Programs/Celframe Office 4/Tools/Uninstall.
4. Use Windows Explorer to browse to C:\Program Files. If it exists, delete the Celframe Office 4 folder (use right-click/Delete).
5. Run celframe.MSI to start install (use Windows explorer and browse to the folder you unzipped to and double click celframe.MSI)
Advanced - remove Celframe from the registry
The following is not usually required and is for experienced users only.
On uninstall, your system registry should be updated to remove relevent Celframe entries. It?s possible (usually because of multiple installations) that this does not happen. To remove Celframe from the registry, please carefully follow these steps. The best time to do this would be after step 3 above, but you can also do it after Celframe is installed (in which case, the Celframe registry entries will be re-built when each application is first run).
1. Select Start/Run and enter REGEDIT
2. Browse (opening the [+] by the entries) to:
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software
3. Delete the Celframe 4.0 entry by right-clicking over it and selecting Delete.

How to make a page border You can use the Format/Page Background feature of Write to make almost any border pattern you want. The steps are:
1. Start Photopaint, select File/New and set the image size roughly the size of typical stationary (e.g. 640x960)
2. Use the Select menu to Select All.
3. Use the fill tool to make the page white (or you can choose a different color or pattern).
4. Use the Select menu and select Contract and contract by 50.
5. Again use the Select menu and select Invert.
6. You now have an area to fill in whatever style you want or use the drawing tools in combination with the square brush to draw out any shape.
7. Save the file in a simple graphic format. For example, File/Save As/GIF and call it ?border?.
8. In Write, select Format/Page Background and set Display to ?Stretch?, tick the From Filecheck box and browse to open the border graphic.
Some examples:
NB: click on the GIF to preview it and right-click over it and select Save Target As to download. To use these examples, you must download and save both files in the pair.
Write file Image Notes
border1.aww border1.gif Simple border
border2.aww border2.gif Double border
border3.aww border3.gif Gradient fill
border4.aww border4.gif Page Curl - uses Filters/Artistic/Page Curl in Studio.

How to turn on/off the Celframe spreadsheet grid (and other display properties) On Screen View
* The default setting for the spreadsheet grid (and other Celframe spreadsheet display options) is controlled in Tools/Options/View dialog.
* The Celframe Spreadsheet grid can be toggled on and off with the Grid command from the View menu - but this is only a temporary setting and does not affect the default.
Print
* The printing of the grid (and other print properties) can be set for each printer you may have installed. This is acheived via the File/Print Setup/Options dialog.
* The default otherwise is controlled by the Tools/Options/Print dialog. Note - if you have existing defaults for any printers, you can override all with the Reset All button.

How to use macro buttons to link Database forms How to link two Database forms together using macros and macro buttons.
Typical scenario is that you?re browsing in database form view and you want a button to display a record from another (usually related) table:
1.Switch the Form to Design Mode using View/Design
2.Select Insert/Macro Button and draw out the new button
3.Right-click and select Properties
4.Give the button some meaningful display text
5. Select the Macros tab
6. Select the ?click? event (you don?t have to but this is the normal way to use a button)
7. Select New Macro and give it a name
8. Save the form
9. In Database Manager, right-click over the new macro and select Edit
10.Enter the following code (adjust to your own form / field names)
Sub OpenRelatedForm ()
id = ActiveDataObject.Fields(?LinkFld1?).Value
Set MyRelatedForm = DBForms.Open (?NameOfForm?)
MyRelatedForm.Filter = ?LinkFld2 = ? & id
End Sub
Where:
*LinkFld1 is the name of the field in your first form that contains the data you want to use to select the appropriate record in the second form (for example, if you had a customer table and an order table, this could be CustomerID).
*LinkFld2 is the name of the field in the second form that relates to the first (for example, if you had a customer table and an order table, this could be CustomerID - i.e. often this will be the same actual name as LinkFld1).
*NameOfForm is the name of the second form
An example of a very simple system of two linked tables can be downloaded here. Open the form EmailForm, browse and use the button ?Get Customer?. Code is in the GetCustomer macro.

How to use Programmable Forms ?Forms? are used in conjunction with macros so you can provide a custom user interface for your macro program. Here?s how to create a simple form in Write:
Stage 1 - create the new form
1. Start Write and Select Tools/Forms Editor
2. Click on the ?+? next to ?Celframe Write? and select ?Global? (or you could select the current document).
3. Click on the ?Add New? button.
4. Close the form manager dialog.
Stage 2 - edit the form
1. Right click over the form and select Properties.
2. Change the default name ?Untitled? to ?My Form? - click on ?Title? enter ?My Form? in the edit box and click Apply.
3. Close the Properties dialog.
4. Select the ?CelframeButton? tool from the toolbox.
5. Drag the shape of the button on the form to create a new button.
6. Right-click over the new button and select ?CelframeButton1? properties.
7. Set the caption to ?Close? and OK the dialog.
8. Right-click over the button and select ?ActiveScript?
9. From the Events drop-down, select ?Click?
10.In the new function (the event handler for the button), enter the macro code to close a form:
Forms.CloseActive
11. Save the Form (use the Save button) and switch to the Write Window (leave the forms program running for now).
Stage 3 - write a macro to call the form
1. Select Tools/Macros and create a new macro, e.g. call it TestForms
2. Add the following code to display the Form:
Forms.ShowForm(?My Form?)
3. Run the macro to display the dialog (e.g. Right-click over macro code and select ?Run?).
Next steps 1 - Get data from a form
1. Go back to the forms editor and select View/Active Objects (or click on the ?VB? button to toggle between script and design modes)
2. Select the ?Celframe Edit Box? tool from the toolbox and draw an edit box on the form.
3. Select View/Active Script and add the following line to the close button function so it looks like this:
Retval.Var(?EditText?) = CelframeEditBox2.Text
Forms.CloseActive
Note that ?CelframeEditBox2? is the default ID for the edit box since it was the second control placed on the form - you can change this if you want to (right-click over edit box and select Properties).
4. Return to the Write macro and add an extra line so it looks like this:
Forms.ShowForm(?My Form?)
MsgBox ReturnVal.Var(?EditText?)
5. Run the macro, type something into the Edit box and select Close.
What?s happening? The macro shows the form, the user interacts with the form and when the form is closed, a ?special? variable called ?EditText? is created to hold the value of the edit box. This is then referenced by the Write macro. You can make as many of these special variables as you want to pass data from a form to the main macro.
Next steps 2 - Investigate the other tools and events
All the other control types and events work in the same way as described as above. You can create complex and forms and put the bulk of the macro code in the actual form as well.

Importing MS Works files
Celframe Office can import and use files from Microsoft Works. The way this is done depends on the application (spreadsheet, word processor, database) and the version of Works the files were created in.
Note that some of the actions described below will require that Celframe?s import/export filters are installed - if you downloaded Celframe and haven?t installed these, run the download wizard.
Importing a Microsoft Works Word Processing File
Celframe can open directly Works word processor files from Works version 2.0 (DOS) and Works version 3.0 (Windows). Select File/Open and change ?Files of Type? to Other Files (*.*). Select the Works file from the list (you may need to change folder to the see the file).
Note: at the time of writing, we are not sure whether this procedure will work for Works 4.x files. If this does not appear to work for you, you?ll need to export the file in Works into a format that Celframe supports. You could use Rich Text Format or Microsoft Word as export formats.
Importing a Microsoft Works Spreadsheet
Celframe does not support the MS Works spreadsheet format. You must use Microsoft Works to save the file in a format that Celframe can import. This will depend on your version of Works as follows:
* Version 4.0 or later - use the Works export option to create a Microsoft Excel spreadsheet file. You should use the Excel 5.0 or later format if available since Celframe can open these Excel files directly with full support for formulas. If you can only save it as an Excel 4.0 or earlier format then Celframe will import the data only (i.e. text, numbers and the results of any formula).
* Versions 3.x or earlier - use the Works export option to create a Lotus 1-2-3 spreadsheet file. This can imported into the Celframe Spreadsheet - but only the data (i.e. text, numbers and the results of any formula).
In the Celframe Spreadsheet, select File/Open and the change ?Files of Type? to either Excel (xls) or Lotus 1-2-3 (wk*) depending on the format you saved as in Works.
Importing a Microsoft Works Database
You can?t import a Microsoft Works database (.wdb) directly into Celframe. You must use Microsoft Works to save the file to one of the file formats that Celframe can import first.
1. Open the database using Microsoft Works.
2. On the File menu, click Save As.
3. In the Save File As Type box, select dBASE IV, and then click OK.
4. Import the dBASE IV .dbf file created in step 3 into Celframe using File/Import when running the Celframe Database.

Magazine promotional version has expired
Celframe has been used in a number of magazine promotions where a one-year version of Celframe was supplied on a front cover DVD or CD-ROM.
After one year from installation, the software will stop running. Celframe is not in charge of editorial of the various magazines and in some cases the 1-year nature of the promotion has not been made plain. We have tried to clarify this in the e-mail that would have been sent out to you at the beginning of the promotion.
To continue running the software beyond 1-year, an upgrade to the full version is required.

Manually installing a patch Sometimes Windows loses the association between Microsoft Windows Patch files (.MSP) and Windows Installer. This could happen if another application takes over this association.
In such circumstances, the patch file cannot be started directly and you will need to apply the patch manually as follows:
1. Download the patch file to your local hard drive. It&39;s probably a good idea to create a local folder to hold the download - for example c:\download
2. When the download is complete, select Start/Run and enter:
MSIEXEC /P c:\[pathtopatch]\nameofpatch.MSP

Quick Database tutorial
This is a step-by-step guide to creating an address book type database for those new to Celframe Database.
1. Start Database. Select Start/Programs/Celframe Office/Celframe Database
2. Create a new database file to hold your data (if you?ve already created a database, just open it instead). Select File/New Database and enter a name (e.g. AddressBook).
3. Create a new table. Select File/New/Table. For the purposes of this exercise (understanding Database better) skip the create table wizard and select the Blank Table option.
4. Design the table. For each item of information you want to store, add a field. Start of with an ?ID? field that stores a unique number for each record you add (this is good practice). Type the names of the fields in the ?Name? column and set the type in the ?type? column. The table design window should look something like this:
5. Save the table. Select OK and give the table a name.
6. Add data. Double-click on the new table and a blank ?grid view? of your new table will be displayed. You can add your data now - each row is a new record. You can also view the data in ?form view? by selecting View/Form and toggle back with View/Grid (there are toolbar buttons that let you do this).
7. Next steps:
* Create a report with View/Report
* Create mailing labels using File/New/Report and selecting Labels in the wizard
* Search for data (use the Find button)
* Sort and filter the data (use the right-click menu).

Occurs when running any Windows Installer setup from behind a proxy server
Windows Installer is a Microsoft technology that Celframe uses for installation purposes. This technology is not designed for (or not capable of) running when there is a proxy server in use.
You can check the proxy server settings in Internet Explorer by selecting Tools/Internet Options and then click the LAN button in the Connections tab.

Start Data Access and open a form How to open a Data Access from the desktop and automatically display a form
First Part: create a link on your desktop that runs the data access application
1. Right-click over the desktop and select New/Shortcut
2. Select Browse and choose the abdata.exe program (it?s normally in c:\program files\celframe office 4\)
3. Select Finish
4. Right-click over the data access and select properties
5. Add the name of the data access to the Target and include the name of the macro you are going to create. For example, suppose your data access is called ?MyData? and is a folder called ?MyDocs? on your C: drive, the full Target should read:
?C:\Program Files\celframe Office 4\Abdata.exe? c:\MyDocs\MyData.adb#StartUp
Second Part: create the macro to open a form
1. Open the data Access containing the form you want to display
2. Select File/New/Macro and call it ?StartUp?
3. Edit the macro so it opens the form. For example, suppose the form is called ?CustomerForm?, the macro should look like this:
Sub Startup ()
DBForms.Open(?CustomerForm?)
End Sub
Now you can close the data Access and test the link on the desktop - the result should be that the form you want is displayed

Summary: Can I - or How can I - upgrade If you have previously owned a copy of Celframe 98, 2000, 2002 or even DOS versions, then you are eligible for an upgrade to the latest Celframe Office.Upgrades are typically around half the price of retail versions.
To upgrade, please:
* Download and Install version 4.
* Once the software is installed and you are happy it is working as you would expect (you have 10 days to check all this) you can purchase a key to permanently activate the software.
|
Summary: Can?t get the Product Key to work.
3. Confirm that the version of Ability matches the one that you have purchased a product key for. For example, all purchases after September 2004 will be for version 4. If you have purchased version 4 and the dialog box says ?Ability Office 2002? or ?Ability Office 2000? then you should download and install the latest software before entering the key. Please see Ability downloads.
4. The three boxes must now be filled in exactly according to the details we?ve given you. Note that all the fields - name, organization and activation key - must be exact (see note b. below).
5. As soon as step 3 is complete, the ?OK? button becomes active - click on this to complete the process. You will now be able to start the Ability program(s). If the OK button does not become active, then it can only be because the text you?ve entered does not exactly match the details you?ve been given or the key does not match your current version.
Trouble shooting
1. The activation process does not allow Name and Organization to be set the same. Please contact support if you think this might be the case.
2. If you select Help/About/Register in any Ability application and the dialog says ?this application is fully registered? then no further action need be taken.
3. If you select Help/About in any Ability application and you cannot see a Register button, then no further action need be taken.

The receiver cannot read emails from Write Write has the facility to ?Send? files via email, in common with many other programs (including other Celframe applications). This function is a standard Windows operation and works by attaching the file to your email program (except with the Plain text option). The email program must be MAPI compliant for this operation to work.
Problem: How do you know the receiver has the right program to open the file? This could mean any of Celframe, Microsoft Office, Adobe PDF reader must be installed. Do you even know if the receiver is running Windows?
Solution: Don?t assume that the receiver has any particular program. Instead, try one of the following, depending on what you are trying to achieve:
1.Choose a common file format - many programs can read either Adobe PDF, Microsoft Word DOC or Rich Text Format files. So in Celframe, select File/Send and choose one of these formats. If in doubt, you could always ask the receiver what sort of file they would like!
2.Plain text will always work. If you want to guarantee the receiver can read the message, select File/Send/Plain Text. Plain text inserts the document into the main body of the email rather than as an attachment - please note all formatting (bold/italic/bullets etc) will not be sent.

Trying to open a file and the Celframe logo stays on screen This can happen if you accidentally open a non supported file with Celframe. A common example (goodness knows why!) is trying to use Celframe Write to open an Adobe PDF file. If as well, the ?Always use this program...? checkbox is clicked, then PDF will be associated with Celframe Write and every time you try to open a PDF from Windows Explorer, the Celframe logo will appear on screen then freeze, since it cannot handle this file format.
To remove the association between Celframe and PDF (or any other file format incorrectly associated with Celframe),do the following:
1.Select Start/Programs/Widows Explorer.
2.Select Tools/Options (or Folder Options)/File Types.
3.Choose ?Adobe Acrobat Document (PDF)? or any whatever file type is causing you a problem.
4.Click Remove and close the dialog.
Now try to open the PDF file directly from Windows Explorer (i.e. double-click on it). When prompted to pick a program, choose Adobe Acrobat and check the ?Always use this program...? box.

What about templates
Do we supply extra templates? No - this ?philosophy? is one of the reasons we are nearer 20MB to download rather than 200MB.
In any case, templates are easy to make yourself. For example, to create your own template that contains your address in the top right corner of the page, try these steps:
1. Start Write (Start/Programs/Celframe Office/Write).
2. Select File/New and click the Template radio button (base it on NORMAL to start off with).
3. Select Insert/Frame and draw a frame in the top-right hand section of the page.
4. Type your address details in the new frame.
5. Make any other format changes you want for the template.
6. Click the Save button and call the new template whatever you want e.g. Home.
7. Select File/New from the menus, choose Home and click the Document radio button - you now have a new document based on the new template.
Repeat step 7 each time you want to use the template.
For more information, select Help/Write Help and look up Templates in the index.

What are the hardware/operating system requirements? * Celframe is designed for, and works best on, Windows XP
* It will also work on Windows 98, Windows ME, Windows 2000 and Windows 2003
* A typical installation of Celframe Office takes around 60MB of hard disk space
* RAM and Processor speed - there are no minimum requirements providing Windows itself will run. However, we would not recommend running Windows XP with less than 128MB RAM and a 500MHz processor, and so this is our ?minimum recommend specification?. Almost any PC less than a year old will easily exceed these requirements.

Write Freeze/Unable to register document. Symptom 1 : error message on install: ?Celframe, clipboard 270296 unable to register document. document may be already open?
Symptom 2: Write and Data Access get as far as displaying splash screen before freezing.
Cause: some Windows services have been turned off.
Solution: Whatever it was that was turned off needs to be turned back on! At time of writing, we do not know the service(s) involved. Note that the same problem exists in Microsoft Word.
|
Write won?t start at all Symptom: Write cannot be started from the menus (Start/Programs/Celframe Office/Write) and gives an error message.
Solution: Re-install Celframe.
More info: This can happen to software in general if a program or system file is moved or deleted by accident. Note that re-installing Celframe Office will not affect your data (which should not be in the same folder as the program anyway) and if you are prompted to ?uninstall? during installation, say ?Yes?. The whole process should only take around 2 mins.

Your trial period has expired
One of three things could have happened:
i) Your trial period has genuinely expired
The download versions from our web site last for 10 days following installation. Re-install will not allow an additional 10 days. Sorry. If you download and install Celframe Write in January and then download and install Celframe Spreadsheet in May, then Spreadsheet will not run since Celframe shares the trial period across all Celframe applications.
ii) There was an error with the trial mechanism
Very rare. If you think this has happened, try running the following small exe: trialfix.exe (20KB). It will do two things: a) it will attempt to correct the trial period (except of a genuinely expired product) and b) it will prompt you to email back to Celframe the result of running the program which shows the current trial status (this helps us with any subsequent problems that may arise).
iii) Something has gone wrong with the product registration
To help us investigate and fix the problem, please run trialfix.exe (20KB) and follow the on-screen instructions for emailing the results back to us. Most likely, simply running the program will fix the problem.

Zip version
Our standard download and install uses Windows Installer 2.0 (a Microsoft technology) directly from our web site. In rare cases, this can fail (proxy server, anti-virus settings, general problems with IE). Also, this method only works if the target PC is connected to the internet.
As an alternative, we have packaged together a zip version. You can download the install files in one go (23MB) as follows:
1. Download the following:
http://www.celframe.com/download4/zip/celframe4_15.zip
2. Unzip to new folder
3. Run Celframe.MSI to start install (use Start/Run)
4. Or copy to CD to transfer to separate PC.
The above comes with US and UK spell/thesaurus/grammar checker. Additional languages are available:
Dutch
German
French
Hungarian
Scandinavian
Spanish
Add any/all of the above to the install set (the folder you unzip the main download to) and these languages will be available as install options.
A note on non-broadband connections
The zip file is close to the upper limit in size for a non-broadband connection - it takes approximately 2 hours to download on a dial-up. Depending on your browser, you should be able to ?resume? broken connections, so if your line is dropped for some reason, you don?t have to start from the beginning.
